Chapter 2780 — The Method of Inheritance
"Oh? You remember now? That's wonderful—tell me, and I'll write it down!" White Leader was rather excited. He had not expected that a matter which had vexed him for many days would come to him so easily. Xuanzhen still respected him as he always had, throwing himself wholeheartedly into whatever White Leader asked of him and never once making excuses—and that gratified White Leader deeply.
And yet, had he not been driven to the end of his rope, White Leader would never have made that call to beg a favor. In a way, then, this misfortune had brought a blessing.
"Very well, Eldest Senior Brother. What you mean is the inheritance of source power in which an illusory attribute is transformed into a real attribute, correct? Not the kind of insight-inheritance that ordinary inheritors receive?"
"That's right, that kind of inheritance." White Leader nodded. "An inheritor's insight-inheritance wouldn't require such effort—one need only go to the place where the attribute originates and comprehend it there. I wouldn't have needed to trouble you with a phone call at all."
"There are two ways to inherit source power. The first is the orthodox path: one must make a whole series of complicated preparations, then, after taking the Marrow-Cleansing Bone-Forging Pill, go to the place of inheritance to receive the source power. The preparations are an extremely complex process. If you wish to know them, Eldest Senior Brother, I will copy them out as quickly as I can, compile them into a volume, and find a chance to mail it to you," Xuanzhen said.
"Good. Then be careful." White Leader spoke with gratitude. For Xuanzhen to do this was still very dangerous. Though the Ancestor Xuanzhen could come and go freely in the Five Luminaries Sect's scripture pavilion and consult the books within, to secretly copy out the secret manual of source-power inheritance and mail it away without anyone being the wiser would be difficult beyond measure.
From what Xuanzhen said, the situation in the Five Luminaries Sect was now essentially one in which the Ancestor Xuanchen covered the sky with a single hand; his eyes and ears were everywhere. If the Ancestor Xuanzhen truly meant to pull off such a feat of deception, he would have to pay a great price in toil.
For instance, memorizing a passage each day and copying it down after returning home—for if he simply took the book away, Xuanchen would certainly grow suspicious. Why would Xuanzhen, who devoted himself wholly to pill refining, suddenly take an interest in matters of inheritance? When something is out of the ordinary, there must be something strange behind it; White Leader understood this well.
"Don't worry, I will be careful." Over the years, the Ancestor Xuanzhen had grown used to living under surveillance. Had it not been for that surveillance, he could never have cultivated his own faction within the Xuandan Sect.
"By the way, what is the other method of inheritance?" White Leader asked.
"The other method belongs to the crooked paths. But it is also a shortcut!" Xuanzhen said. "That is to have an illusory-attribute person engage in dual cultivation with an inheritor of that line, and through dual cultivation obtain the inheritance of source power. The drawback of this method is that the inheritor must be a virgin; otherwise it has no effect at all."
"Oh? Source power can be inherited that way too?" White Leader was somewhat surprised. "Is this method reliable?"
"It should be reliable. That is how the sect's ancient texts record it. The reason I remember is that Xuanchen once studied this area—matters concerning inheritors are all handled by Xuanchen," Xuanzhen said. "But though this method is simple, it is hardly practical. First of all, all the inheritors we know of are currently giving priority to that plan, so finding other inheritors on your end would be extremely difficult. Eldest Senior Brother, on whose behalf are you asking about this?"
"Oh, a friend of mine. I was merely curious." It was not that White Leader did not trust Xuanzhen, but that he did not want to expose too much about Wei Zhao. "So it seems the first method is the only practical one?"
"It would appear so." The Ancestor Xuanzhen nodded. "Rest easy, Eldest Senior Brother. Be patient a while, and leave the rest to me."
"All right. Let's be in touch, then. Once you've finished copying it out, just call me," White Leader said.
After hanging up, White Leader immediately called Wei Zhao and relayed the Ancestor Xuanzhen's words to him.
Wei Zhao was momentarily stunned. Dual cultivation with an inheritor?
"What does he mean by dual cultivation?" Wei Zhao admitted that his own thoughts had turned somewhat wicked. Though dual cultivation came in many varieties—what Yang Guo and Little Dragon Maiden did could also be called dual cultivation—in most novels, dual cultivation meant cultivating together in bed...
"I didn't ask about that either. Since he said the inheritor must be a virgin, then dual cultivation must mean... you know," White Leader said.
"Uh... all right." Wei Zhao smiled bitterly. His little wife ought to be an inheritor; if he dual cultivated with Feng Xiaoxiao, could that fill in one of his illusory attributes and turn it real? But the Ice Palace required Feng Xiaoxiao to preserve her chastity, which contradicted dual cultivation. For a moment Wei Zhao did not know how to choose. "Still, having me dual cultivate with seven inheritors is a bit too unrealistic, isn't it?"
"It is indeed unrealistic, which is why I lean toward the first method. But we must wait for the opportunity—wait for my junior brother Xuanzhen to copy the method out and send it back," White Leader said. "He is currently constrained by Xuanchen and can scarcely touch the Five Luminaries Sect's core secrets. Xuanchen is also working on the matter of inheritors, but Xuanzhen knows little about these things, and I know even less."
"Then if it were dual cultivation, how would it be done?" Wei Zhao asked.
"I didn't ask about that in detail. If you're interested, I'll go and ask," White Leader said.
"All right. In any case, knowing more can't hurt," Wei Zhao said with a nod.
After hanging up, Wei Zhao smiled bitterly. White Leader's news could be counted as good news, and yet it amounted to nothing at all. Dual cultivation with inheritors was hardly realistic for Wei Zhao. Even if Feng Xiaoxiao was an inheritor, how long would he have to wait to gather the other six?
And even if he gathered them all, would they dual cultivate with him? Feng Xiaoxiao certainly would not object, but what about the others? Wei Zhao had no wish to do anything that coerced others. And even if he wanted to coerce them, would they be so easily coerced?
Behind every inheritor stood an ancient power; coercion was even less of an option for Wei Zhao.
Shaking his head, Wei Zhao set these thoughts aside for the moment and pinned his hopes on the first method of source-power inheritance that the Ancestor Xuanzhen had described.
Though the first method might be very troublesome, it was also the only one Wei Zhao could actually carry out. As for the Marrow-Cleansing Bone-Forging Pill, he no longer needed to take it—when he was small, the old man had fed him many pills for prolonging life and expelling toxins, which were no different in effect from the Marrow-Cleansing Bone-Forging Pill. That left only the other preparations. (To be continued.
