Chapter 985 — Feng Tianlong's Request: Even Without the Tie of Feng Tianlong, Wei Zhao Would Never Have Been Stingy With His "Desk-Mate" Feng Xiaoxiao; and Besides, He Had Once Touched Her Breast, Which Left Him Always a Little Apologetic

The Blossom Guardian

"That is truly too kind of you!" Hearing Wei Zhao's words, Feng Tianlong was so overcome he hardly knew what to say. He well understood the worth of true qi; he had never imagined Wei Zhao would agree without a moment's hesitation.

"It is too early for thanks." Wei Zhao waved a hand. "From what we see now, true qi has little effect on Xiaoxiao's illness, and offers no chance of a cure..."

"Yes..." Feng Tianlong sighed, and said with some bitterness, "For now we can only treat a dead horse as a living one... What other way is there?"

"Wei Zhao, do you truly have no other way? Could you... save Feng Xiaoxiao? She is so pitiful..." Tang Yun's heart could not bear it. She feared Wei Zhao might hold back out of concern for her feelings, or out of his own dislike for Feng Xiaoxiao, and so not give the healing his all.

"Yes, can you think of something more... that Life-Extending Detox Pill — would it be of any use to Xiaoxiao?" Feng Tianlong cast Tang Yun a grateful look, then asked, just as anxiously.

"That Life-Extending Detox Pill is of no use at all!" Wei Zhao shook his head. "But I can give you one. It will not cure her, and it will not harm her."

"Ah?" Feng Tianlong was stunned. As he saw it, even if Wei Zhao agreed to give him one Life-Extending Detox Pill, he would not simply hand it over for nothing; after all, a single pill had fetched more than four hundred million at auction. However close he and Wei Zhao might be, Wei Zhao could hardly give one away on a whim, for there was a cost behind it.

Yet Feng Tianlong had never expected Wei Zhao to be so generous as to offer him one outright, and for a moment he was moved beyond measure.

"How can I accept this... a single pill is worth hundreds of millions..." Feng Tianlong could not help but be shaken.

"Heh, I would not mind giving you ten." Wei Zhao spoke calmly. "The friendship one builds at certain moments lasts a lifetime, does it not?"

"You are right. I was being petty!" Feng Tianlong nodded heavily.

"Tell me more about her illness in detail, and everywhere she has been treated, and I will think of something." Wei Zhao said after a moment's thought. In truth, Wei Zhao truly had no solution. Feng Xiaoxiao's condition was something he had never heard of; if a way was to be found at all, it could only be by having Feng Tianlong supply more information, and then Wei Zhao consulting the old man in his own household. Though he had inherited a great part of the old man's medical art, there were, after all, things at which the old man was still his better.

"Xiaoxiao's illness must in fact begin with her mother. Xiaoxiao's mother also died of this hereditary family disease. When she died she was only twenty; even so, it was only through a divine physician's desperate efforts that Xiaoxiao's mother was sustained to the utmost limit of twenty years. The rest of the family generally reach the end of their lives at only seventeen or eighteen!" Feng Tianlong sighed. "According to the hospital's analysis now, there is an unknown substance in Xiaoxiao's blood, and no one knows what that substance is. Some say it is a blood defect, some say she has been poisoned... And the divine physician who treated Xiaoxiao's mother in those years analyzed it as perhaps a kind of gu poison..."

Wei Zhao frowned. What Feng Tianlong had told him amounted to nothing at all, for not one crucial piece of information was in it, leaving Wei Zhao with the feeling that there was nowhere to begin. He asked offhandedly, "That divine physician — who was he?"

In Wei Zhao's view, for that divine physician to keep Feng Xiaoxiao's mother alive to the limit of twenty years was no small achievement.

"His name was Lin Dongfang. He was once a divine physician of great renown; the older generation all know his name..." Feng Tianlong said.

"Lin Dongfang?" Wei Zhao's eyes went wide at once, and he stared at Feng Tianlong. "You are certain the divine physician was called Lin Dongfang?"

"Yes. Why — Wei Zhao, have you heard of him too?" Feng Tianlong was startled by Wei Zhao's reaction, but then seemed to think of something. "Your surname is Lin as well. You cannot be..."

"Since he examined her and had no way, then I truly have no way either..." Wei Zhao said with a bitter smile. "He is the old man of my household. He is the one who taught me medicine..."

"The old man? He is your father?" Feng Tianlong's eyes went wide as well, and he stared at Wei Zhao in disbelief. He had never imagined that after nineteen years he would meet Lin Dongfang's successor — and that he would be troubled, likewise, by the very same illness.

"Not my father. By age, he could be called grandfather, but he says I am no blood kin of his — that he picked me up..." This time Wei Zhao concealed nothing. For one thing, Feng Tianlong was a man worthy of trust; for another, Feng Tianlong had known Lin Dongfang before, so there was no need to hide anything from him.

"Ah!" Feng Tianlong sighed. "It seems there truly is no way..."

Wei Zhao spread his hands. He was powerless to help. Feng Xiaoxiao's illness was peculiar and offered nothing to go on; Wei Zhao had never seen any comparable remedy in the ancient texts. So though he pitied Feng Xiaoxiao, he truly could do nothing.

"Uncle Feng, restrain your grief and accept what must be. Birth, age, illness and death are the common lot of man!" Wei Zhao sighed. "Still, I will do my utmost to think of something."

"Thank you..." Feng Tianlong nodded somewhat gloomily. He could only accept this reality now. That Wei Zhao had no way either made him give up utterly; he did not believe Wei Zhao could come up with anything, for if even Wei Zhao's master Lin Dongfang had no way, what could Wei Zhao do?

"Xiaoxiao is already nineteen... I fear there is only half a year, a year left at most..." Feng Tianlong said sorrowfully.

"..." Wei Zhao did not know what to say either. He had seen too many people die, and so had Feng Tianlong; but when it came to his own daughter, he would still grieve.

"Wei Zhao, I..." Feng Tianlong hesitated here. "I have a request..."

"Uncle Feng, please speak. Do not call it a request; if it is within my power, I will not shrink from it!" Wei Zhao said at once.

"I can see it — that child Xiaoxiao is fond of you!" Feng Tianlong raised his head and looked at Wei Zhao.

"Probably." Wei Zhao nodded noncommittally and waited for what Feng Tianlong would say next.

Tang Yun's heart, however, gave a leap, and she too raised her head.

"Xiaoxiao has little time left. From childhood to now, she has never liked any boy, has never truly been in love... Yet I can see that this time, Xiaoxiao truly wants to have a romance — a grand, blazing romance!" Feng Tianlong said here, then addressed Wei Zhao: "I hope you will grant me this request. This is my request to you, as your one-time old friend and as Xiaoxiao's father!"
