Chapter 39 — All for Nothing

Wang Lin's face fell at once. Was this not humiliating him in public? He was about to say something more when he heard Zhou Yanning say, "Yang Ce, there's nothing between him and me—truly, I don't like him."

"Whether you like him or not—what does that have to do with me?" Yang Wenru frowned.

"Yang Ce, please don't misunderstand. My mother going to see you—that wasn't my idea," Zhou Yanning hurried to explain. "It was my mother who went to you on her own. And today, it was my mother who tricked me into coming out to meet him."

"Are you done? If you're done, you can go too." Yang Ce glanced at Chen Shutang, whose expression had shifted slightly, and felt a secret anxiety. What was wrong with this Zhou Yanning? Was she trying to ruin him?

"Yang Ce, I—can't you feel how I feel about you?" Seeing Yang Minlan's cold tone, Zhou Yanning could not hold back the tears that welled up in her heartbreak. "Yang Ce, I love you! Don't you understand even now? You kissed me several times and I never refused—and that night, in the hotel room—"

By now Zhou Yanning was heartbroken past bearing. She felt as though her heart had suddenly dropped into an icehouse. Her relationship with Yan had only just begun to thaw, and now her mother and Wang Lin had ruined it.

All her efforts over such a long time had come to nothing in an instant. Everything, everything had been reset to zero. Her relationship with Yan had once again become that of strangers passing each other by. How could this not break the heart of a girl so devoted, so steadfast in love?
