Chapter 1989 — Doubts About Their Origins

The Blossom Guardian

"There's nothing to be done about it — Sister Han is a big star. Coming second is already good enough for us." Cheng Yiyi, for her part, did not mind at all.

Wei Zhao did not care in the least how fast or slow Zhang Duopan drove; he made no attempt to chase him, but held a steady speed along the airport expressway. As a rule, unless it was a matter of real importance, Wei Zhao did not break traffic laws.

"Thanks for this — coming to perform for our class when you're so busy." Wei Zhao said to Xu Shilan: "Only now do I learn that your appearance fees aren't low. Cheng Yiyi had connections and still asked for two hundred thousand; yours must be higher than that, surely?"

"Of course. Ordinarily, for an event like this, I wouldn't go even for one or two million!" Xu Shilan said. "I came here out of respect for you."

"Seems my face carries a fair amount of weight," Wei Zhao said.

"Naturally. Do you think I'd go if just anyone asked me? Never mind not paying me — they could pay me and I still wouldn't go," Xu Shilan said.

"Heh..." Wei Zhao chuckled, but all at once his expression shifted slightly; the smile on his face turned incomparably grave, and he said to Xu Shilan: "There's danger! Don't move."

"Ah?" Xu Shilan was startled, not knowing what Wei Zhao meant. But even as she froze, two black Audi A6s came hurtling from the opposite lane, smashed through the iron barrier dividing the road, and sent it crashing down not far in front of Wei Zhao's car; the two A6s then cut sharply in ahead of him.

The sudden turn of events made Xu Shilan cry out. Wei Zhao, however, seemed perfectly calm: he slammed on the brakes and brought the car to a stop. Behind him, two more Audi A6s had driven up, sandwiching his car in the middle so that he could neither go forward nor back.

The reason Wei Zhao knew there was danger was that the jade pendant had sent out a warning signal; thus he could know a step ahead that danger was descending.

"Stay in the car and don't move!" Wei Zhao glanced at one of the two Audi A6s behind him and frowned. Of the other three cars he took no notice at all, but the man in this one caught him somewhat by surprise.

An expert at the peak of the late Profound rank — though to Wei Zhao this was nothing at all, since he was already an Earth rank expert, and Profound rank experts were to him about what ants were, easy enough to crush underfoot. Yet there was something not at all simple about the matter at hand.

Who had sent this peak late Profound rank expert? Wei Zhao did not believe it was any of his enemies — unless their brains had been pierced through, they would never send a peak late Profound rank expert to his death. Last time, three Earth rank experts, one of them even late Earth rank, had been burned by Wei Zhao until not even ashes remained; would they dare send a Profound rank one now? It simply made no sense.

But if it wasn't them, then who had sent them?

Could they be robbers? But he had never heard of robbers robbing people like this on the airport expressway, and the car Wei Zhao drove was low-key — a Grand Cherokee, utterly unremarkable. Earlier he had plainly seen a Rolls-Royce go past, and no one had robbed that.

Besides, if it were a simple robbery, wasn't sending a peak late Profound rank expert a bit of a waste?

But all speculation was meaningless. After warning Xu Shilan, Wei Zhao got out of the car. The peak late Profound rank expert in the car behind did not move; instead, three men in black suits got out of the other three cars and, the moment they stepped down, drew pistols and aimed them at Wei Zhao, shouting: "Kid, tell everyone in the car to get out, or don't blame us for blowing you away."

"The people in the car?" Wei Zhao was rather surprised. Could these men be after Xu Shilan, to kidnap her? It looked as though they were not targeting him — otherwise, however crazed an enemy might be, he could not possibly send three gun-toting ordinary men to point guns at an Earth rank expert. Unless he was insane.

"Enough talk — do it now!" one of the black-clad men barked.

"You're here for Xu Shilan? Who sent you? Tell me, and I won't kill you," Wei Zhao said mildly, looking at the black-clad man who had spoken.

"Ha? Kid, you're going to kill us?" The man thought he had misheard, and burst out laughing: "You mean you can kill us? Is that it?"

"Yes. Since you've missed your chance, there's no need to say anything more." Wei Zhao's hand flicked, and a silver needle shot out, burying itself in the black-clad man's chest; the man did not even manage a grunt before he fell to the ground.

Wei Zhao did not even need true qi to finish off this black-clad man, because he was merely an ordinary person — at most a cultivator who had just crossed the threshold of martial arts, not even a Yellow rank expert.

The remaining two both drew in a sharp breath. They had not expected this man before them to strike the instant he spoke, without leaving the slightest room; and the most terrifying part was that neither of them had seen clearly, or had any idea, how Wei Zhao had killed the black-clad man who had spoken.

"Hiss... you... who are you?" one of the two remaining black-clad men asked.

"Your turn. Who sent you?" Wei Zhao asked.

"Who are you? Why are you here?" the black-clad man asked, somewhat tense.

"You've outlived your usefulness too." Wei Zhao flicked his wrist, and the second black-clad man fell to the ground as well.

"You... you, you, you, you..." The third black-clad man was stunned; to this moment he still did not know how his two companions had died, so he stammered instinctively, and after saying "you" several times he hurriedly looked toward the Audi A6 beside him and cried: "Brother Sanlei, this one's a tough nut — save me, quick..."

In fact, even before the third black-clad man opened his mouth, the man in the last Audi A6 could no longer sit still; he pushed the door open and stepped out.

"Who sent you? My patience is limited," Wei Zhao said mildly.

Wei Zhao was not afraid of trouble, but it was obvious that this was the airport expressway, crowded with traffic coming and going. He feared that if this dragged on, Xu Shilan's identity would be exposed, which would be bad for her; so he wanted to settle it quickly.
