Chapter 1951 — What Am I Supposed to Do?
"I know. Don't worry — Zhang Duopan clearly hasn't a shred of artistic sense. I'm confident I can beat him." Bai Weituo thumped his chest as he spoke.
"Still, don't underestimate him. That kid has a nasty streak." Wei Zhao said. The business in the cafeteria had made it plain enough: Zhang Duopan was a schemer, full of tricks.
Soon Wang Xinyan and Han Jingyi returned from the restroom. The two seemed a little more familiar with each other now, but Wang Xinyan, for reasons she could not quite name, still did not invite Han Jingyi to share her desk. Perhaps she did not want to disturb the ease and quiet she had with Wei Zhao during class.
She had grown used to sitting beside Wei Zhao. It gave her a feeling of solidity, of peace — as though this were simply how things were meant to be.
And so she did not want anyone else joining them, breaking a stillness whose duration she could not guess.
She had heard that Kang Zhaolong was also pursuing a doctorate in pharmacy at Donghai Engineering University, and that she had been sent here precisely to create opportunities for contact with him... Once Kang Zhaolong appeared, this quiet would surely be shattered.
At noon Wei Zhao sent the young miss a text message, telling her he needed to go back to Songshan City to see Sun Jingyan and compare her internal-energy method and true qi with the true qi in Granny Sun's head.
The young miss agreed without a moment's hesitation — but then handed Wei Zhao a difficult task: he was to go back to the villa and bring her all the underwear from her room on the second floor...
There was underwear for sale here too, of course, but some of it she had grown used to wearing and did not want to change.
Wei Zhao was speechless. He remembered how, when he first arrived, the young miss would not even let him go upstairs; now... she was sending him to fetch her underwear. And when had she become so bold and uninhibited? Had she not always been a reserved sort of person?
While Wei Zhao was puzzling over this, Gu Mengyao was about to explode with fury. "Xiaoshu, who told you to send that?"
"But Sister Yaoyao, didn't you say yourself that the new underwear and pajamas you bought don't feel right, and that you wanted everything from home in Songshan brought over? I saw Brother Arrow was going back, so I had him pick it up on the way..." Shen Yushu said, perfectly justified.
"In the cabinet? What thing?" Shen Yushu blinked, momentarily blank.
"You bought it yourself — you don't know what it is?" Gu Mengyao snapped. "That rotating whatsit you mail-ordered! You just had to buy that piece of junk out of curiosity!"
"Ah!" At Gu Mengyao's reminder, Shen Yushu remembered at once. There was a small box in the cabinet, and inside it were indeed some realistic female products. She had bought them online out of curiosity, but once they arrived she discovered they could damage the hymen, so she had not dared try them. After studying them for a while she had tossed them into the cabinet, and later forgotten all about them. She had never expected Gu Mengyao to remember.
"Don't 'ah' me — send a text right now and tell him not to take it!" Gu Mengyao was beside herself.
"But if I text him now, won't that just make it more obvious? What if Brother Arrow gets even more curious?" Shen Yushu said.
"You..." Gu Mengyao thought it over, and it was true. If she sent a message now stopping Wei Zhao from fetching the underwear, he would find it very strange, and then he might go through everything carefully, and the whole thing would blow up even bigger — as if she and Xiaoshu were a pair of lechers deliberately hiding something from him...
At that thought, Gu Mengyao sighed in defeat. "Forget it. You can explain tonight."
"Oh, it's fine, I'll explain it well. Don't worry, I won't drag Sister Yaoyao into it!" Shen Yushu promised, patting her chest.
"It had nothing to do with me in the first place!" Gu Mengyao shrieked, frantic with anger.
"But Sister Yaoyao, you studied it too. When I bought it, you didn't object either!" Shen Yushu said.
"Then how are you going to explain it?" Gu Mengyao stopped wrangling over that point.
"I'll say I wanted to sleep with Brother Arrow but didn't know how it worked, so I bought one to study — to learn the anatomy and avoid any problems when the time comes," Shen Yushu said.
"Suit yourself." Gu Mengyao was rather speechless. Shen Yushu had always been this brazen, and she was the best person to do the explaining anyway.
Before leaving, Wei Zhao stopped by the dormitory. The suitcase of US dollars he had taken off the drug dealers was still in his backpack. He meant to give this money to Yu Xiaoke. Fatty Lai could offer her some support in building the orphanage — waiving certain construction and material costs — but the children there still needed money to live on, and Fatty Lai could not keep providing indefinitely; Dr. Guan Pharmaceuticals needed a great deal of capital for its own growth now.
After taking the money, Wei Zhao called Sun Jingyan.
Sun Jingyan was startled and delighted to receive his call out of the blue.
"Well, well, the great bandit — what made you call me? I thought you'd forgotten all about me!" Sun Jingyan's feelings toward Wei Zhao had been changing imperceptibly. At first she had merely liked him a little; then she had begun to feel a faint stirring of the heart; and it was only after the Great Clan Gathering that she realized just how formidable Wei Zhao truly was.
She had still been wavering, unsure whether what she felt for Wei Zhao was love or admiration. But when she saw Qiu Lingshan shamelessly throwing herself at him, the competitive chord in Sun Jingyan's heart was struck. A man this good — if she did not seize him now, there would be no second chance.
And these past few days, hearing that Qiu Lingshan was about to be transferred to Donghai City, she grew even more anxious, cursing Qiu Lingshan inwardly as shameless. Wei Zhao's lawful wife had only just gone to Snow Valley to cultivate in seclusion, and already she was scrambling to take her place. Sun Jingyan must not let her succeed.
She was, after all, Wei Zhao's lover. Surely it was easier for a lover to be promoted to the legitimate seat than for an outsider like Qiu Lingshan?
Sometimes things were simply strange that way. Sun Jingyan had gone from a faint stirring of the heart to Wei Zhao occupying her entire being, a curious process that could only be called imperceptible. When she calmed down and thought about it, even she found it unbelievable.
She had fallen in love with Wei Zhao, just like that?
When had it begun?
When he helped her deal with her business rival?
Or when she had him pose as her boyfriend to fool Wu Chengtian?
Or perhaps when she wanted to bring him home as her boyfriend to meet her grandfather?
