Chapter 1210 — What Was Overlooked
"If you hadn't brought that up, I'd have nearly forgotten it myself!" Old Man Wei's expression turned grave. "That is absolutely impossible! Your present true qi does her body only harm, never good! So think carefully — the last time she woke, was there something else that happened as well? The true qi should have been useless. You may well have been misled!"
"Misled?" Wei Zhao was slightly taken aback. He carefully replayed the scene: Xiaoxiao collapsed, he carried her to the bed, then he circulated the Xuanyuan Dragon-Taming Art, and before long she woke. That was the whole of it — nothing else had happened!
"Yes, I believe you were misled," Old Man Wei said with certainty. "I have studied this ailment far longer than you have. I do not know what the true cause is, but it was absolutely not your true qi!"
"Mm... I truly cannot think of anything!" At that moment Wei Zhao was in torment — success was right before his eyes, and yet he could not lay hold of the thread. He knew he must have overlooked something. But what, exactly, had he overlooked?
"That I cannot help you with; you must rely on your own memory," Old Man Wei said mildly. "Though, if I may ask something beside the point — you seem to care a great deal whether this Feng Xiaoxiao lives or dies?"
"Mm... she is my girlfriend," Wei Zhao said with certainty.
"Oh?" After hearing Wei Zhao's words, that "oh" carried a distinctly odd note; yet the old man said nothing of it, only, "Then good luck to you."
Wei Zhao hung up, his mind a tangled skein. Old Man Wei's information had been useful — it had given him a fairly detailed picture of what was going on inside Feng Xiaoxiao's body — and yet it was of no use whatsoever; it could not help the present situation in the least.
"Well? Does Elder Lin have a way?" The moment Wei Zhao hung up, Feng Tianlong asked anxiously. In truth he had already guessed the answer from Wei Zhao's disappointed, anxious expression, but he refused to give up, and clinging to the thinnest of hopes, he asked anyway.
Wei Zhao shook his head slightly. There was no need to deceive Feng Tianlong in such a matter; Feng Xiaoxiao stood at the threshold of life and death, and a lie was utterly meaningless — it would only let Feng Tianlong's hope curdle into a deeper disappointment.
Feng Tianlong sighed bleakly. He had, in fact, foreseen this outcome long ago.
"Uncle Feng, let me think a while longer..." Wei Zhao waved a hand, signaling Feng Tianlong not to be impatient. What he was turning over was how he had brought Feng Xiaoxiao around that day in the Yanjing hotel.
Feng Tianlong nodded and watched him tensely.
Wei Zhao closed his eyes and carefully replayed the scene — but think as he might, he could find nothing out of the ordinary in it.
"Elder Jiao, help me remember — that day in the Yanjing hotel, what happened, before and after? Think it through for me, from beginning to end, not a single detail left out!" Wei Zhao appealed to Elder Jiao.
"Mm... very well." Jiao Yazi thought a moment, then said, "That day Feng Xiaoxiao went to take a shower, and you waited for her in the room. After a long while with no sound at all, you went to check and found her unconscious in the bathroom, so you picked her up, and then you felt her chest..."
"Huh?" Wei Zhao's face flushed scarlet at once. "Elder Jiao, let us not bring that up — it was not intentional..."
"Did you not tell me not to leave out a single detail?" Jiao Yazi snorted.
"Uh... fine, go on!" Wei Zhao set aside his embarrassment; at a time like this, recalling the details mattered most.
"Then you discovered that, and you nearly flung Feng Xiaoxiao away, and you got your arm cut on the door latch, and then you carried Feng Xiaoxiao to the bed to treat her..." Jiao Yazi recounted carefully.
"Wait — cut my arm?" Wei Zhao frowned. If anything in the whole affair was out of the ordinary, it was the cut on his arm. He remembered how the blood had streamed everywhere — on Feng Xiaoxiao's body and on the bedsheets — and the next morning she had thought he had done something to her...
"Yes, you cut your arm." Jiao Yazi said suddenly, "By the way — because your blood has been tempered by the Xuanyuan Dragon-Taming Art, it too is of the utmost yang nature. Could it be that your blood saved Feng Xiaoxiao?"
"Oh?" Wei Zhao thought it possible. Without another word, he bit his finger open, and the blood poured like a fountain onto Feng Xiaoxiao's forehead...
"Xiao Yi, what are you doing?" Feng Tianlong was startled; he had not expected Wei Zhao to do such a thing, and had no idea what he meant by it.
Tang Yun, standing to one side, was also taken aback, unable to fathom what Wei Zhao was about — but if Wei Zhao did it, he must have his reasons. So Tang Yun said to Feng Tianlong, "Uncle Feng, please be calm. Wei Zhao must have thought of something."
"Oh..." Feng Tianlong glanced at Tang Yun with some embarrassment — he was less steady than a nineteen-year-old girl. And thinking on it, worry brings confusion; fearing for Feng Xiaoxiao's life, he was naturally fragile within.
What Wei Zhao had not expected was that the blood seemed to seep into Feng Xiaoxiao's skin, absorbed by her drop by drop. His body, upon advancing to the Yellow Rank, had gradually expelled those impurities, so his blood was of the purest kind, and it was quickly absorbed by Feng Xiaoxiao entirely.
A flicker of relief crossed Wei Zhao's face — today had truly been a stroke of luck. Had it not been for Old Man Wei's prompting and Jiao Yazi's help in recalling, he would surely have overlooked this small detail. Yet who would have thought that this small detail was the very key to saving Feng Xiaoxiao?
Watching his daughter absorb Wei Zhao's blood, Feng Tianlong's eyes went wide; he had no idea what sort of performance Wei Zhao was putting on. But whatever it was, it must be good for Feng Xiaoxiao — otherwise his daughter could not be absorbing Wei Zhao's blood.
Tang Yun also covered her mouth. She had never imagined that Wei Zhao would use his own blood to save Feng Xiaoxiao, and for a moment her vision swam. A little blood she would not have minded, but in that short while Wei Zhao had already shed at least half a mineral-water bottle's worth — how long could he hold out at this rate?
Tang Yun wanted to stop him, but she also knew it was impossible for Wei Zhao to stop, and besides, she did not want anything to happen to Feng Xiaoxiao either!
