Chapter 1173 — The Boss Has a Way
Watching Manager Zhang's departing back, Yu Ren could not help but heave a sigh. Things at home had only just begun to look up — there was a bit of money now, life had taken a turn for the better, everything was heading in a good direction — and then, who could have foreseen it, such a piece of rotten luck had to come along.
Yu Ren turned and went to ask the doctor about the situation, while Yu Yuanyuan looked at Er Goudan, caught somewhere between anger and laughter: "Zhou Jiaming, this hotheaded temper of yours — can't you change it a little? The person this time isn't like the ones at the underground boxing ring. If you beat her to death, that's a crime, isn't it? Then you'd be going to prison!"
"I never said I'd beat anybody to death. I only said I'd go demand an explanation, and beat the lion to death!" Er Goudan chuckled. "I ain't really stupid..."
At that, Yu Yuanyuan could not help but snort with laughter: "Even so, you can't just go doing whatever you please... Let's see how Mom's condition looks first..."
Yu Yuanyuan still did not know the extent of Mom's injuries; she assumed they could not be too serious. Manager Zhang had lowered his voice earlier, and she had not caught it.
After a while, Yu Ren came back from outside the ward, his face all gloom, sighing and groaning.
"Dad, how are Mom's injuries? Is there going to be trouble?" The moment Yu Yuanyuan saw her father come in, she hurried to meet him and asked.
"Ach! Don't even bring it up. The doctor said that even if your mother's leg is treated, she'll be crippled — she'll limp for the rest of her life!" Yu Ren sighed, and said with a kind of helpless grief: "A thing this big has happened, and that family thinks handing over money settles it — they won't even come out and offer an apology... Ach!"
"Mom's leg... is going to be crippled?" Yu Yuanyuan was stunned by Yu Ren's words, and stared at her father in disbelief.
"That's what the doctor said, and that's the best case. If the recovery doesn't go well, she may not even be able to stand; she'd have to walk with a cane, and sit in a wheelchair the rest of the time!" Yu Ren lowered his head, somewhat pained.
A life that had only just begun to improve — how had something gone wrong again?
"No. I have to go demand an explanation. We can't just let it go at that!" Er Goudan clenched his fists. "How can they get away with this? If they don't give me an explanation, I'll kill that lion with one punch, and we'll see whether my fist is harder or their so-called reason is!"
"Even if you beat that lion to death, it won't fix anything now!" Yu Yuanyuan glared at Er Goudan. "Let's first talk over what we're going to do from here."
"Fine by me!" Er Goudan nodded, then sighed again: "Ach! If only we could find Boss. An injury like Auntie's would be nothing at all in Boss's hands!"
"Huh? Your Boss is a doctor?" Yu Yuanyuan was startled. She knew Er Goudan had come here looking for someone, but she hadn't known that the person he sought was a doctor.
"That's right, my Boss is a divine physician! The whole reason I came this time was to deliver medicine to Boss!" Er Goudan said proudly. Wei Zhao would always be Er Goudan's pride; to speak of Wei Zhao was like speaking of himself, and it filled Er Goudan with a mighty sense of accomplishment.
"Oh? Then that means there's hope for Mom's leg?" Yu Yuanyuan was both startled and delighted at Er Goudan's words. To her mind, Er Goudan did not seem the sort to boast and brag — though that was indeed what she had thought of him when they first met, his later actions had proven he was no mere talker. He had said he would beat Boxing Master Li to death, and he truly had beaten Boxing Master Li to death; so that proved Er Goudan was a thoroughly down-to-earth sort of man.
"Of course there's hope! As long as we find Boss, there's no problem at all!" Er Goudan grinned. "That much you needn't worry about!"
"Phew... then how do we find your Boss?" Yu Yuanyuan had not cared much before about the person Er Goudan was looking for, but now she had grown anxious.
"I don't know either. It's all that woman swindler's fault — if not for her, I wouldn't have lost that note!" Er Goudan said helplessly.
"Then we'll just look slowly. We're bound to find him. As long as there's hope, that's enough!" At least now Yu Yuanyuan was full of hope. When the doctor had finished speaking earlier, she had been turning over in her mind how the days ahead were to be endured; now that there was a chance for things to change, she was naturally all the happier.
"Then I'll go look for that overbearing family first, and demand justice!" Er Goudan nodded and said.
"No rush on that for now..." Yu Yuanyuan knew Er Goudan was formidable, but some things could not be hurried. Who knew, maybe they would come to visit tomorrow? So Yu Yuanyuan said: "Let's wait a bit. If that family never shows their face again, then we'll go look for them, but try not to get into a conflict — all we want is an explanation..."
"Fine by me! I'll give them three days. If they don't come give us an explanation in three days, I'll go to their door!" Er Goudan nodded. These past days, having spent so much time with Yu Yuanyuan, Er Goudan had grown a little more refined in his speech, and in front of her he did his best not to fall back into his old rough country way of talking.
For a time, everyone in the villa compound began to live in fear.
Wei Zhao and the others had been out for two days, and ordinarily left early and returned late for school, so naturally they had no idea what had happened in the compound; they did not yet know that a lion had appeared there.
As for Gou Huli, she still took a lion out every day, strutting through the compound on her walks, and the residents all knew how domineering Gou Huli was, and knew her backing ran deep, so none of them dared provoke her.
If you can't afford to offend them, can't you at least keep out of their way? So wherever Gou Huli appeared, people made way, and gave the lion she led an especially wide berth.
Of course, throwing her weight around in front of ordinary people no longer gave Gou Huli any sense of accomplishment. What she wanted most was to throw her weight around in front of Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu and Wei Zhao. The Xiao family had after all been snubbed at the Gu family's place, and had yet to win back their ground since.
So these past two days Gou Huli had been searching for a chance to go make trouble for the Gu family, but each time she walked to the gate of Gu Mengyao's villa, she saw the courtyard gate locked tight and the villa dark — evidently no one was home.
This left Gou Huli thoroughly depressed: she had finally gotten herself a chance to show off and trample on someone, and yet she simply could not put it to use! It was like a cultivator obtaining a supreme treasure only to find he cannot open it — that gloom of heart was known to Gou Huli alone.
Today, Gou Huli once more walked, still unwilling to give up, to the gate of Gu Mengyao's villa, and looked inside — and her heart leapt with joy!
