Chapter 1122 — Valentine's Day Special: Xiao Ning's Story, Part 7

The Blossom Guardian

With a beauty in his arms, Wei Zhao was no Liuxia Hui, and he had never mastered that peerless art of sitting unmoved with a woman on his lap. All he could do was fight to hold his desire in check, reminding himself at every moment that he was here to heal Yu Ning, not to take advantage of her helplessness.

But the night was long, and they were a lone man and a lone woman; in such circumstances, something more was bound to follow...

For sixteen years, Yu Ning had never known such a feeling of safety. Wei Zhao's broad arms gave her boundless warmth, and once more she sank into a deep sleep...

When she woke again, the chill was gone from her body, replaced by a pleasant warmth. It spread through her, soft and comforting.

The feeling made her reluctant to leave it, and at the same time shy and embarrassed.

After all, she was lying in the arms of a strange man. In the past, Yu Ning could never have imagined such a thing; yet now it had happened, and she was unwilling to let it go.

Was this what it felt like to like someone? Yu Ning was at a loss. In all her sixteen years, her emotional life had been a blank. Her dealings with those young gentlemen had been purely a matter of profit, social engagements arranged by her family to pave the way for her to one day take charge of the Yu family's power.

Wei Zhao's senses were keen. The moment the girl in his arms woke, he felt it. He opened his eyes and asked softly, "You're awake? How do you feel?"

"I... I'm still so cold..." Yu Ning lied. She did not know why she lied, but lied she had.

Her face was very red, but thankfully it was night; in the firelight a face would look flushed anyway, so she need not fear Wei Zhao would notice.

Wei Zhao reached out and touched Yu Ning's forehead. What he felt was a normal temperature, and he could not help but start. Her fever had broken, so why would she still be cold? Could it be that only her forehead had cooled, and the rest of her had not?

At that thought, Wei Zhao instinctively moved his hand toward Yu Ning's armpit, but inevitably his hand brushed her breast. The accident made his hand pause for a moment, though it looked for all the world as if he had touched her on purpose.

Yu Ning gave a soft murmur, her face reddening further, yet she neither spoke to stop him nor raised a hand to push him away. That instant felt like an electric shock, stirring in her a flutter such as she had never known, and her breathing grew hurried.

"Mm..." Yu Ning let out a moan barely audible, but faint as it was, in the stillness of the cave Wei Zhao heard it perfectly clearly, and his own heartbeat sped up considerably. The allure of that sound was beyond imagining; in that instant he nearly felt desire burn him alive.

Yu Ning's heart held both nervousness and anticipation. Could it be that the legendary thing was about to happen? Yu Ning was not a loose woman, but this scene, this moment, truly put such a thought in her mind.

Undoubtedly Wei Zhao was a man who had captured her heart; he was the first man ever to enter it.

Her earlier impression of Wei Zhao had without question been a poor one. His coldness and indifference had irritated her no end. From the very beginning, when he joined the group, Wei Zhao had treated Yu Ning with nothing but disregard. That alone she might have forgiven, but worse still, whenever she proposed a plan of action, he always took the opposite side.

That made her loathe him beyond measure. How could this man be so arrogant? Even if you were sent by the special department to assist with her family's business negotiations, was that any excuse to act so high and mighty? Did you not know how to cherish a woman's tenderness? Yu Ning viciously speculated that Wei Zhao must be gay, that there was something wrong with his orientation.

Yet later events proved that Wei Zhao was an extraordinary and uncommon man. His judgments were all correct, and when she was in danger, he was the first to throw himself into harm's way to protect her. He had even taken a bullet because of her willfulness, and still he voiced not a word of complaint.

In that moment, Yu Ning's heart was moved. She did not know whether this counted as love, but sometimes love is as simple as that. Love and hate can trade places in the blink of an eye; the hate of before had turned to love.

The moment Xu Xian saved Lady White Snake, she fell in love with him. So in this moment, Yu Ning too had fallen for Wei Zhao.

Perhaps at sixteen her feelings were still unripe, but she dared to love and dared to hate, and gave no thought to the consequences.

Yu Ning forgot the family behind her, forgot the expectations the Yu family held for her. Time stopped at this one moment; she wished she could lean on Wei Zhao's bosom forever, where she felt happy and safe.

But just then Wei Zhao's hand withdrew, leaving a faint disappointment in her heart. She wanted him to go on, yet her modesty would not let her say so.

"Hold me... I'm cold..." Yu Ning lied again.

Her words, without question, made Wei Zhao, whose mind was already unclear, more impetuous and more unclear still. He paid no heed to whether she was cold or not; he reached out and held her tight.

Their breathing grew hot and heavy. Yu Ning turned her head a little to the side and closed her eyes, nervous and expectant.

This, without question, stirred Wei Zhao all the more. Looking at the slight upward curve of Yu Ning's lips, he felt an urge to kiss her.

Their lips drew close, almost touching, when suddenly from outside the cave came several low howls of wild wolves.

Wei Zhao was instantly calm. He raised his head and looked outside. In the pitch-black night, pairs of glimmering lights shone: the eyes of wolves.

"Hoo—" Wei Zhao let out a long breath and released Yu Ning's body. He had come within a hair of making a mistake. If anything had really happened tonight, his career would have ended right there. Sleeping with an employer was unpardonable; there was no telling how the old man at home would punish him.

"There's a pack of wolves coming," Wei Zhao said mildly.

Yu Ning opened her eyes too, a flicker of disappointment passing through her lovely gaze. She had been so forward, and yet he... did he not like her? Or had the wolves truly interrupted them?

"Damned wolves, rotten wolves, idiot wolves! I'll gouge out your eyeballs and pop them underfoot!" Yu Ning cursed under her breath, then raised her head and glanced outside the cave as well. But one look, and she was stunned by the number of wolves.

How could there be so many wolves? Twenty of them at least!

At the sight of them, Yu Ning instantly forgot her bold talk of popping wolf eyeballs underfoot and instinctively pressed closer into Wei Zhao's arms. "I'm scared..."
