Chapter 798 — The One at Our House Is a Fake

The Blossom Guardian

When Kang Zhaoming saw that Wang Shubin had truly brought Guan Xin over, he was overjoyed. To stir her maternal instincts and win her sympathy, he began to wail: "Ah, it hurts so much, I feel so awful — my face, my leg..."

Guan Xin had never expected that Kang Zhaoming, a grown man, could be so fragile as to lie there howling.

"Isn't this bandaged up rather nicely? What do you mean no one's looking after him?" Guan Xin saw that both of Kang Zhaoming's legs had been set in plaster and splints, already properly treated — nothing at all like what Wang Shubin had described, that no one was tending to him.

"That... I meant there's no one here for the follow-up care..." Wang Shubin said with a dry laugh. At the time, his idea had been to trick Guan Xin into coming first and then play it by ear once she arrived.

"His legs are no longer a case of ordinary trauma — they're too badly injured. This falls under orthopedic care, and that's something I can't do. There are dedicated orthopedic nurses for that," Guan Xin said. "I'll help him get in touch with one."

"Huh?" Kang Zhaoming was struck dumb! Too serious now? Before, a little cut had been too minor; now it was too grave? It had escalated to the level of orthopedics?

But that wasn't something he could control, either — he hadn't wanted his legs broken!

Kang Zhaoming was furious, and he wished he could curse those demolition men in the shantytown to death. Why had they had to smash him this badly? If they'd struck a little lighter, Guan Xin could have nursed him! How had he let Guan Xin slip through his fingers again? What rotten luck!

"Well... Young Master Ming's legs will naturally be looked after by an orthopedic nurse, but I was speaking of the wound on his head. That wound is serious too — if it isn't handled properly and leaves a scar, what then?" Wang Shubin's eyes lit up as he shifted his target to Kang Zhaoming's head. "Nurse Guan Xin, just look at how handsome Young Master Ming is, so elegant and distinguished — if his face were ruined, he'd never be able to show it in public again, would he? We can't trust anyone else; we can only trust an old acquaintance like you!"

Hearing this, Kang Zhaoming was thrilled. Wang Shubin really was a strategist — his mind worked fast, and he'd already thought of a way to keep Guan Xin here. Even he himself hadn't thought of it!

That was right — his legs were too badly injured, but his head was fine; it was merely a big gash, exactly the sort of thing Guan Xin handled. He hurriedly chimed in: "Yes, yes, it's better to have one of our own handling it. Outsiders simply aren't that careful. I don't want my face ruined!"

"Oh, I can't promise it won't leave a scar," Guan Xin said with a curl of her lip. "I'm not Divine Doctor Kang, and I don't have his Golden Wound Medicine. The wound medicine made by Doctor Guan in my family is all counterfeit — it's no good. If you're afraid of a scar, you'd best smear on some of Divine Doctor Kang's Golden Wound Medicine. It's very effective, and your family has plenty of it!"

"Ga?!" Kang Zhaoming suddenly remembered — wasn't his family's Divine Doctor Kang Golden Wound Medicine the very bane of external injuries? And there was a note of mockery in Guan Xin's words; Kang Zhaoming knew it was a jab at what he had said in the bookstore that day!

Kang Zhaoming regretted it at once. That day in the bookstore, heaven knew what had gotten into him — he had forgotten the connection between Guan Xin and Doctor Guan and spouted a load of nonsense. Not only had it left Guan Xin with a poor impression of him, worst of all, once said, it could not be unsaid. He could hardly come out and say that Doctor Guan was actually better than Divine Doctor Kang — wouldn't that be smearing his own family's name?

"All right, if there's nothing else, I'll be going. Our hospital has limited resources and can't obtain Divine Doctor Kang's Golden Wound Medicine, so you'd better bring your own." With that, Guan Xin turned and left the ward. By now she was certain: Kang Zhaoming was making a fuss over nothing, deliberately sending Wang Shubin to fetch her. All that talk of no one caring for him was pure nonsense.

Kang Zhaoming lay on the sickbed, somewhat dejected. Why was his luck so bad? He had thought that once he'd taken care of Xiaofen, he could pursue Guan Xin smoothly — but now it seemed Guan Xin had a very poor impression of him!

"Damn it, why is my luck so rotten?" Kang Zhaoming cursed angrily.

"Young Master Ming, I think it's because Guan Xin has grown suspicious!" Wang Shubin frowned and spoke cautiously. "When I went to see her earlier, she said to me very sarcastically, 'Has the wound on your hand flared up again?' Clearly she doesn't believe in such coincidences — you falling ill and going to the hospital every single day, and the intervals are so short..."

"That's true!" Kang Zhaoming nodded. Thinking it over carefully, he had indeed been falling ill a bit too often; it was hard to avoid arousing suspicion! Any normal person would find it unbelievable! Yet Kang Zhaoming had a grievance he could not voice — the previous two times had indeed been his own doing, but this time he really had been injured by accident!

Still, the lesson of the boy who cried wolf was a deep one, and Guan Xin no longer believed him! No matter how sick Kang Zhaoming became, in Guan Xin's eyes it was all an act, and there was nothing he could do about it!

"Young Master Ming, if this won't work, why don't we change tactics?" Wang Shubin said after a moment's hesitation.

"Change tactics? Change to what?" Kang Zhaoming was annoyed at once. "Then I got hurt for nothing? If you think this suffering is so easy, why don't you try it yourself?"

"Well... we'd still have to work out what to change to, but the situation right now is that you're injured and Guan Xin doesn't believe it!" Wang Shubin said with a bitter smile.

Kang Zhaoming deflated all at once. True — what did it matter that he had suffered for nothing? Guan Xin didn't believe him now; she was already suspicious. If he kept on like this, it would clearly backfire. It seemed he really would have to change his strategy!

But what strategy should he change to? Kang Zhaoming felt that all his old womanizing tricks were useless now! In the past, all he'd had to do was send flowers, spout sweet talk, put on a bit of a show, and take the girl out shopping — and she'd fall right into his hands!

But Guan Xin clearly didn't go for that sort of thing. He had sent flowers with no effect; sweet talk seemed to hold no interest for her; and as for putting on a show, that went without saying — Guan Xin's family was well-off too, so she certainly wouldn't be swayed by the little money he spent buying her things.

"How about you go online and look for some good tricks?" Kang Zhaoming had heard that plenty of idle people shared their womanizing experience on forums, but he himself rarely went online and had no idea whether such things actually existed.

"That could work. I'll take a look in a bit!" Wang Shubin nodded. "See if there are any good ideas. But I feel, Young Master Ming, that what you lack right now is a common topic with Guan Xin — when the two of you are together, there's simply nothing to talk about!"

"True, but she's a nurse. You can hardly expect me to become a nurse too, can you?" Kang Zhaoming frowned.
