Chapter 774 — Darling, Save Me, Quick!
"Even the cops wouldn't dare claim they could wipe out our whole gang, and your boyfriend can? Is he Superman? Or Ultraman?" one of Black Bird Bro's underlings sneered.
"Ha, does this little chick think her boyfriend's the protagonist of some fantasy novel? Is your boyfriend named Liu Lei or Yang Ming?" Another of Black Bird Bro's men, a fan of web novels, asked in the same mocking tone. Those names belonged to the protagonists of a novel called *Very Pure and Ambiguous: The Prequel*.
Yu Xiaoke was nervous inside, but facing the jeers of Black Bird Bro and his men, she could not afford to look too guilty. She managed only a dry laugh. "My boyfriend... he... he... isn't he here already!"
Suddenly, Yu Xiaoke cried out in excitement, "He's right behind you! Darling, come save me, help, help!"
"Keep acting. You want to distract us so you can make a run for it? You think we'd believe you?" Black Bird Bro snorted coldly, plainly unconvinced by her words. To him, Yu Xiaoke had simply run out of options and was improvising a boyfriend on the spot to muddle them and seize a chance to escape.
"It's true!" Yu Xiaoke kept shouting. "Save me, hubby, over here, I'm right here! It's your Yu Xiaoke!"
Wei Zhao had not driven, so naturally he avoided the main roads. Following his memory of the school's direction, he cut through a shortcut. Of course, he was not worried about getting lost — as long as the sun's position held true, Wei Zhao would never lose his way.
This was the most basic law of survival in the wild. Only by swiftly discerning direction could one avoid getting lost, and only then could one stay alive.
Though Wei Zhao was now threading through a seemingly deserted little alley, he knew his overall direction was correct, so he felt no concern.
He had not walked long before he spotted five burly men up ahead, surrounding and attacking a young girl.
Wei Zhao was the sort who kept his distance from trouble that was none of his business. Unless the person involved was someone he knew, he rarely lifted a finger to meddle.
And yet — the girl's voice sounded somewhat familiar? Moreover, her cries for help made Wei Zhao start.
There was someone else in this alley besides himself? Wei Zhao was instantly alarmed. How had he failed to sense anyone else approaching in the alley? Could this chick's husband be a top-tier expert, one whose trail even he could not detect?
But Wei Zhao's guess was clearly wrong, because when Yu Xiaoke shouted "Darling," she was shouting toward him — and there was no one else here but Wei Zhao.
"You calling me?" Wei Zhao pointed at himself, somewhat baffled. He had already recognized who this chick was, but they had only met once; "darling" was surely out of the question.
Wei Zhao's voice rang out, and it made Black Bird Bro and the burly men freeze. They had assumed Yu Xiaoke was shouting nonsense, that there was no one there at all. But Wei Zhao's voice clearly changed their minds.
"Watch this chick! Don't let her get away!" Black Bird Bro ordered his four underlings, then turned to look at Wei Zhao. But one glance was enough to set his earlier unease completely at ease.
Because, in his eyes, Wei Zhao was nothing but a pale-faced pretty boy. With that slender, small frame, how could he be any match for him? Even if Wei Zhao really was Yu Xiaoke's boyfriend, he was probably only a bit skilled at qinggong — how could he possibly stand against the five of them?
So after a single glance, Black Bird Bro dismissed Wei Zhao entirely.
"Yes, darling, come save me, these men want to... want to have their way with your wife!" Yu Xiaoke waved at Wei Zhao.
"Huh?" Wei Zhao's eyes went wide. These men wanted to have their way with his wife? With Tang Yun? But in a flash he understood: Yu Xiaoke was surely being surrounded by these men, and in desperation she wanted his help. Fearing he would refuse, she had first nailed down his identity, then shifted the conflict onto him.
It seemed this female thief was no fool.
Wei Zhao's impression of Yu Xiaoke was neither good nor bad. At least she was quite pretty, quite fetching — that much pleased his eye. So when Yu Xiaoke ran into trouble, Wei Zhao took a wholly indifferent stance, helping or not helping entirely according to his own mood.
"You're Yu Xiaoke's man?" Black Bird Bro looked Wei Zhao up and down with one bird-like eye, seemingly not taking him seriously at all.
Wei Zhao ignored Black Bird Bro and walked toward Yu Xiaoke, frowning as he went. "Didn't I tell you to go home and train a few more years before coming out again? Well? Stealing from people, and now you've been caught, haven't you?"
Wei Zhao assumed Yu Xiaoke had been surrounded because she stole from Black Bird Bro. In fact, his guess was both right and wrong. Yu Xiaoke had indeed stolen plenty of money from this gang of thieves, but it was merely thieves preying on thieves. Though Black Bird Bro hated her, if that were all, he would have simply caught her and extorted a sum of money — he would not have wanted to have his way with her.
The current situation was this: Yu Xiaoke had kicked one of Black Bird Bro's balls to mush, which gave him the notion of keeping her as his own captive plaything. In his view, if he did not have his way with Yu Xiaoke, how could he ever answer for his exploded ball?
"I'm talking to you, you fucking deaf? Did I tell you to come over?" Black Bird Bro reached out to block Wei Zhao, but failed to stop him. In the blink of an eye, Wei Zhao had somehow appeared at Yu Xiaoke's side.
"No, it's not like that! They're all thieves, help me drive them off, quick!" Yu Xiaoke whispered to Wei Zhao.
"Thieves? Aren't you one too?" Wei Zhao shot back.
"It's different! I'm a good thief, they're bad thieves!" Yu Xiaoke was nearly frantic enough to cry. "Please, just help me this once, all right? Otherwise I'm done for!"
"Thieves come in good and bad now?" Wei Zhao could not help but laugh. Yu Xiaoke's explanation was rather amusing. "Besides, what are you to me?"
"Of course thieves come in good and bad! I'm a good thief, while they act only out of personal greed — I'm not like them!" Yu Xiaoke explained. "Look, I've stolen so much money, and what I'm wearing is just a twenty-yuan street-stall outfit!"
"Oh, so you're a little miser — stealing money and still wearing twenty-yuan clothes?" Wei Zhao glanced at Yu Xiaoke's clothes. They were indeed shabby, a grade worse than even Tang Yun's. Clearly she had not been lying.
"Right? So hurry and help me, I can't beat them!" Yu Xiaoke said, with a barefaced frankness.
