Chapter 772 — Even Worse Than Xiaoshu
"Heh. Not as bad as you." Wei Zhao smiled.
"Oh, you absolutely are! But Xiaoshu likes bad men!" Shen Yushu felt Wei Zhao was very much to her taste; together they could form a two-person prank squad.
"Wei Zhao, you knocked Zhao Qibing's tower down again — that isn't going to cause any trouble, is it?" Tang Yun frowned slightly. She felt Shen Yushu had been a touch too obvious; even if you do like Wei Zhao, you can't just come right out and say it in front of me, can you?
"Did I do that? Their own bomb blew up their own tower, and I even had a car go down with it. I should be demanding they cover my losses!" Wei Zhao said, somewhat pained. "That was my first car, you know. I was very attached to it. It was in that car that the two of us pledged ourselves to each other, wasn't it?"
"What nonsense are you talking?" Tang Yun was deeply embarrassed. Wei Zhao's words brought back that night — drugged by Zou Ruoming, in Wei Zhao's car, the first time Wei Zhao had touched her body? And was that not also when she had begun to be certain of her own feelings, that she wanted to be with him?
It seemed so, didn't it? Tang Yun herself was a little unclear about the course her own heart had taken; it was as though she had fallen for Wei Zhao all at once.
While Wei Zhao and Tang Yun were talking, the young mistress might as well not have heard a thing. She still wore that same light, unhurried expression, as if none of it had much to do with her. Only after Wei Zhao and Tang Yun had finished did she speak: "Wei Zhao, how are we getting back now?"
"I've already called Uncle Qing. He should be on his way?" Wei Zhao said. "In a little while you'll all ride back; when you pass the bank, would you cash that check for Auntie Wang? She's never handled that kind of business before?"
"All right." The young mistress nodded. There was no telling what was really going through her mind.
Uncle Qing's car, though hardly small, could seat only five. Add Wei Zhao and there would be one too many. So Wei Zhao decided to walk, and to let Uncle Qing first deliver Gu Mengyao, Shen Yushu and Tang Yun back to the school.
And Gu Mengyao had clearly been thinking about the same problem: "How are you getting back?"
"This is a good chance for me to go ask Qiu Lingshan what formalities are required when a car has been smashed to pieces." Wei Zhao said.
Even as he spoke, Uncle Qing's Bentley pulled up. Wei Zhao had Tang Yun's mother take the front passenger seat, while Gu Mengyao, Shen Yushu and Tang Yun sat in the back.
It was the first time in her life that Tang Yun's mother had ridden in such a fine car. Gazing at the gleaming lacquer of the body, she was thrilled beyond measure. This was a car one only ever saw on television — and now, one day, she had actually gotten to sit in one?
Tang Yun, for her part, felt a little awkward. With Wei Zhao not coming along, she was somewhat embarrassed to ride together with Gu Mengyao; but then she remembered that Gu Mengyao had also come in Wei Zhao's car before, and she breathed a little easier.
And the driver, Uncle Qing, showed not the slightest trace of contempt toward Tang Yun and her mother, keeping to that same humble, deferential manner.
In fact, even if Wei Zhao had not been a Mystic-rank expert, Uncle Qing would still have treated Wei Zhao and those around him with great respect. This was because of Gu Pengzhan, and also because Wei Zhao had saved Gu Mengyao's life several times. For those two reasons alone, Uncle Qing would hold Wei Zhao and his people in the highest esteem.
And besides, only yesterday Uncle Qing had learned that Wei Zhao was in truth a Mystic-rank expert, one who could even produce a high Yellow-rank dog — he had been so astounded it was almost beyond belief! Now his admiration for Wei Zhao came from the bottom of his heart; it was the reverence a man pays to true strength.
This, too, was why Wei Zhao felt at ease letting Tang Yun and her mother ride in Uncle Qing's car: at the very least, Uncle Qing would not be rude to her; and the young mistress and Xiaoshu were both kind of heart, so they were surely even less likely to use displays of wealth as a weapon against Tang Yun.
Such things were beneath the young mistress. In fact, the war between Gu Mengyao and Tang Yun had never once touched on family background or money; their weapons of battle were nothing more than who was prettier, who could play at a threesome...
This struck Wei Zhao as funny, and at the same time gave him a deeper understanding of the young mistress's character.
The young mistress did not treat people differently according to whether they had money or not. As for the hostility she had shown Wei Zhao when they first met, that had likely come entirely from her wariness and rejection of strangers! The young mistress had never had any friends, from childhood on — how could she possibly have accepted a man living in the same villa as her all at once?
Thinking back on the young mistress's earlier mockery and sarcasm — were those not, in truth, a portrait of her lonely soul?
Wei Zhao discovered that the longer he spent in the young mistress's company, the more he found her to be an utterly, utterly adorable girl.
Watching Uncle Qing's Bentley drive off, Wei Zhao set out toward the school, thinking as he walked: ought he to buy a seven-seat wagon? Otherwise, when they went out in the future, he really was afraid there would not be room for everyone.
If he were taking out only Tang Yun, Kang Xiaobo, Xiaofen and Liu Xinwen, an ordinary car would do well enough; but if Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu decided to tag along and join the fun, then there would certainly not be enough seats.
As for Wei Zhao's talk of going to ask Qiu Lingshan how to handle a wrecked car, it was nothing but an excuse. Wei Zhao did not want Gu Mengyao and the others to feel awkward, and so he had said that, and had not gotten into the car with them.
Yu Xiaoke had reaped a handsome harvest these past two days. Yesterday she had fleeced a fat sheep and then successfully escaped from right under Qiu Lingshan's nose, which left her thoroughly pleased and smug. Yu Xiaoke felt like a mouse that had toyed with a cat.
Today her luck seemed just as good. Not long after Yu Xiaoke went out, she spotted a member of another gang of thieves, who had just stolen someone's wallet and was gloating as he looked for a place to count his money...
Yu Xiaoke's eyes rolled. Without giving anything away, she followed him. Though she stole money, she had very firm principles: she stole only from the wealthy and heartless, from corrupt officials, and from wicked men — and from her own kind.
Her "own kind," of course, meant other thieves. Yu Xiaoke would occasionally stoop to a bit of black-on-black.
Today, this member of the thieves' gang naturally became Yu Xiaoke's target.
Yu Xiaoke followed the thief carefully, eyeing the big wallet in his pocket with envy. That was a great deal of money — a good ten thousand if not more! Who knew where the fellow had stolen it from; judging by the quality of the wallet alone it was fine goods. He must be a rich man.
Maybe there were shopping cards or the like inside that wallet too — in which case the score would be even bigger!
From Yu Xiaoke's experience, many rich people carried unregistered shopping cards or gift vouchers from malls and supermarkets in their wallets. Once those were in hand, you could go straight to the shops and spend them!
