Chapter 763 — The Young Mistress's Heart
That was why Wei Zhao had asked Yu Kun that one question earlier; and once he received a negative answer, he struck without mercy.
"Mr. Gu, rest assured — with me here, no one will lay a hand on Yaoyao or Xiaoshu," Wei Zhao said to Gu Mengyao.
"Mm, with you around, I'm at ease." Gu Pengzhan patted Wei Zhao on the shoulder. "Since nothing's wrong anymore, I'll be heading back. You two get some rest early as well?"
"Uncle Chu, you go on ahead — there's nothing more to do here..." Wei Zhao rose and saw Uncle Qing and Gu Pengzhan out.
In the courtyard, Uncle Qing first opened the car door for Gu Pengzhan and helped him in, then glanced at Wei Zhao, looking as though he wanted to say something but could not quite begin.
"Ha, Uncle Qing, I never would have guessed you were an expert at the peak of the late Yellow Rank?" Wei Zhao had seen that Uncle Qing had something on his mind, and so spoke first.
Wei Zhao's impression of Uncle Qing was quite good. Whatever else might be said, having an expert at the peak of the late Yellow Rank deliver meals to the villa every day was no small thing!
"With my little bit of strength, how could I compare to you?" Uncle Qing shook his head and smiled bitterly. "That dog..."
"I don't know what happened either. I fed it too much energy... true qi, and it turned into this state..." Wei Zhao, too, smiled bitterly at the mention of General Weiwu. It was only natural that Uncle Qing could see through General Weiwu's strength.
After all, General Weiwu was not like a human; it had no notion of concealing its strength. So anyone who practiced martial arts could tell how strong General Weiwu was.
"I never imagined I'd live to see a Yellow Rank dog... Yellow Rank experts are already rare enough. If word got out that someone kept a Yellow Rank dog at home, I wonder if people would be scared to death?" Uncle Qing shook his head and said to Wei Zhao, "The young mistress's safety — I leave it in your hands. I'll be going now."
"Mm, goodbye, Uncle Qing." Wei Zhao nodded, watched Uncle Qing's car drive off, and went back inside the villa.
General Weiwu's recovery delighted Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu, sweeping away their earlier unhappiness. At that moment they were playing with General Weiwu in the living room. Seeing Wei Zhao come in, Gu Mengyao solemnly carried General Weiwu over to him and said to it, "Come, General Weiwu, let's thank Wei Zhao together!"
"Oh?" Wei Zhao smiled. "No thanks needed. So long as you're not sad anymore, that's enough."
"Thank you, Wei Zhao." The young mistress spoke with utter seriousness. "You don't know what General Weiwu means to me... It's very important to me! It's been with me all these years, from childhood on..."
"I know. That's why I saved it." Wei Zhao nodded.
Gu Mengyao was slightly taken aback, but on reflection it made sense — she had been so grief-stricken earlier that Wei Zhao must have seen it. "Wei Zhao, you haven't rested yet, have you? It's past three already. Go and rest, quickly."
"Oh, all right. You two sleep early as well?" Wei Zhao was too embarrassed to say he had already slept — after all, the young mistress and Shen Yushu had been waiting anxiously at the door the whole time.
Back in his room, Wei Zhao did not sleep. Lying on the bed, he thought about the Yu family.
He had thought his life would never again intersect with the Yu family. Yet now the Yu family had come knocking at his door of their own accord?
Xiaoning... are you one of them?
Wei Zhao sighed softly, and that peerless face surfaced once more in his mind.
He wondered how she was doing now. Wei Zhao sighed faintly. How was he supposed to face her?
Hours slipped by in the blink of an eye. Wei Zhao lay on the bed, his thoughts running wild, until noise came again from the living room.
The young mistress and Xiaoshu are awake?
Wei Zhao checked the time; it should be about right. He climbed out of bed, pushed the door open and stepped out — and was met with a scene that astonished him!
The young mistress and Xiaoshu were actually busy doing something in the kitchen?
"Xiaoshu, you big idiot, the internet said to pour the oil in first — why did you put the eggs in first?" Gu Mengyao's furious voice came from the kitchen.
"Oh, I didn't know. I thought you put the eggs in first and then braised them in soybean oil..." Shen Yushu said meekly.
"Forget it. No oil is healthier anyway..." Gu Mengyao was somewhat speechless. But before she could settle her nerves, another problem arose.
From the rice cooker came a crackling, popping sound!
"Xiaoshu, what did you do now?" Gu Mengyao ran instinctively to the rice cooker and listened closely — and was startled. She hurriedly lifted the lid, then went pale with fury: "Why didn't you add water? How is this supposed to cook porridge?"
"Oh, I thought you added the water afterward..." Shen Yushu said.
"You idiot, I really shouldn't have let you be my assistant! With cooking skills like yours, don't even think about getting married!" Gu Mengyao was so angry she wanted to kick her out of the kitchen.
"Oh, Brother Shield can cook. I don't need to." Shen Yushu's expression was utterly indifferent.
"When you marry, are you going to bring Wei Zhao along?" Gu Mengyao's eyes went wide.
"I'll just marry him, won't I..." Shen Yushu looked at Gu Mengyao as though it were the most natural thing in the world.
"Xiaoshu, tell me the truth — do you like Wei Zhao?" Gu Mengyao's gaze fixed on Shen Yushu's eyes.
"Don't you like him too?" Shen Yushu countered.
"I don't." Gu Mengyao said seriously, "Xiaoshu, Wei Zhao has a girlfriend. Don't go astray."
"Oh, I'm not. I want to be the little wife — it doesn't matter if he has a girlfriend." Shen Yushu shook her head.
"You're fooling yourself." Gu Mengyao said, "Xiaoshu, what are you really thinking?"
"I'm not thinking anything. I just want to be with Sister Yaoyao forever." Shen Yushu said, innocent and guileless.
"Fine, I won't bother with you anymore. Do as you like." Gu Mengyao had a headache. She and Xiaoshu had both grown up; though the two of them were still thick as thieves, deep down each of them had secrets of her own. It had nothing to do with whether a friendship between best friends was solid — it was simply that everyone had their privacy.
Gu Mengyao looked at the popcorn in the rice cooker and had no idea what to do.
Wei Zhao heard what the young mistress and Xiaoshu said, but did not go over to interrupt.
Wei Zhao's feelings about Shen Yushu were peculiar. He always felt there was something about her temperament that he had seen before somewhere; yet when he thought hard, he truly had never known a girl of that disposition.
Only after the two of them had finished their private talk did Wei Zhao walk toward the kitchen. "All right, leave it to me. You two just wait in the living room."
Gu Mengyao was startled by Wei Zhao's sudden appearance; Shen Yushu, by contrast, stuck out her tongue and clapped her hands. "Oh, we get to eat something ready-made again. See, Sister Yaoyao? I told you — with Brother Shield around, they don't need us."
