Chapter 690 — Is Changing Your Name a Good Idea?

The Blossom Guardian

Kang Zhaoming had it easier — he had simply fainted dead away, so he no longer knew what fear was. But Zhu Xiaozhang and Wang Shubin were scared half to death; standing there beside a corpse was enough to make anyone's flesh creep...

After Kang Zhaoming and his two companions had gone, the pretty nurse fished three fat wallets out from inside her white coat, opened them up, and could not help but light up with delight, her eyes crinkling into crescent moons. "Well, well — who'd have thought you three lecherous pigs had so much money! Hmph, this is what your filthy habits get you. Enjoy your little tour of the morgue!"

The pretty nurse quickly pulled the cash out of the wallets and stuffed it into her own pockets, then dropped all three of the empty wallets out the window.

Before long, Nurse Wang was back, a swaddled bundle cradled in her arms. Finding the three of them gone, she asked, a little puzzled, "Where did those three get to?"

Nurse Wang had only meant to teach Kang Zhaoming a small lesson for being such an unreliable character — a cold wouldn't kill anyone, after all — so she had deliberately stepped out to run another errand first, intending to come back and give them their injections. But when she returned, they were nowhere to be seen.

"They probably couldn't wait and went somewhere else for the shot?" The pretty nurse pretended to know nothing of the matter, skipped over, took the swaddled baby from Nurse Wang's arms, had a good look, and said, "Wow, what a cute little princess!"

"Yes. These parents are cold-hearted, all right — just dumping the child here in the hospital like this, and the names they left behind were fakes, so the police can't trace a thing!" Nurse Wang sighed. "Thank goodness your orphanage takes them in — otherwise, God knows what this hospital would have done with all these abandoned babies these past few years!"

"Boys over girls — what else!" The baby girl in the pretty nurse's arms seemed to understand the words; hearing that her parents didn't want her, she burst into tears. The pretty nurse hurried to soothe her. "There, there, don't cry, little darling. Sister Xiaoke is taking you to a new home, where there are lots of big brothers and sisters. There, there, little sweetpea... Sister Xiaoke will go buy you some formula in a minute!"

Her voice was sweet, as though she had been born for nothing so much as coaxing small children. The baby girl, hearing her words, stopped crying instead. After a little while of rocking, she sank into a deep sleep.

"Xiaoke, Head Nurse Sun in obstetrics is off today, so there's no need to go looking for her — just take the baby straight back, all right? Here are the papers; I've already done them for you." Nurse Wang handed a document folder to the pretty nurse.

"Thank you, Nurse Wang! I'll be off, then?" The pretty nurse took the baby's file and thanked her with a bright smile.

"Thank what? Our hospital should be thanking you — otherwise, God knows what we'd do with these children!" Nurse Wang waved a hand.

"Right then, I'll be going." The pretty nurse took off the white coat she was wearing and handed it back to Nurse Wang. "Here. The air-conditioning in this room is rather freezing. I've gotten used to a house without it, and I must say I'm not quite used to this anymore."

Nurse Wang shook her head, took the white coat, and saw the pretty nurse out.

......................

Wei Zhao left the hospital, hailed a taxi, and headed back to the villa first. There was nothing for him to do there, and the young lady probably didn't much want to see him at the moment either — the whole business earlier had been far too awkward!

Wei Zhao rather regretted it — wouldn't it have been better to simply grab some male student at random and force the poison out of her? But at the time he hadn't been a hundred percent certain he could compound an antidote, and he couldn't take that risk. Let him choose all over again, and he would still go and save the young lady first!

Whether the others could be saved or not — that really had very little to do with Wei Zhao.

Seven-Herb Fatal Powder — a poison long thought lost to the world, and here it had turned up. Wei Zhao had said nothing about it at the hospital, but he had to report this to the old man as soon as possible. Was there still someone alive who knew this poison? And which faction had sent him?

This affair was plainly no random act; it had been planned in advance. Was the target Gu Pengzhan, or Gu Mengyao? Wei Zhao still couldn't say — he would have to question Qiu Lingshan before he could learn the details.

He could put the call to Qiu Lingshan through from the car, but the call to the old man was another matter — that one was sensitive, and Wei Zhao would have to wait until he got home.

"Brain-dead chick — any results on the poisoning?" Wei Zhao dialed Qiu Lingshan's number.

Qiu Lingshan ground her teeth in fury. Why was he calling her that again? She'd actually thought he'd stopped! It was an awful nickname, thank you very much! Though she had tried her hardest to read it as Wei Zhao's pet name for her — even a term of endearment — she simply couldn't manage it!

"Wei Zhao, oh Wei Zhao — our relationship being what it is now, don't call me your brain-dead chick anymore, okay?" Qiu Lingshan wanted to protest, but she knew it had to be handled tactfully; an outright protest to Wei Zhao's face would achieve nothing. Still, she had mapped out his weak spot — he was soft-hearted. Ask him sweetly enough, and it just might work!

"All right. Then what should I call you? Tigress?" Wei Zhao shot back.

"Um... you could call me Little Song, or Cutie. Tigress sounds awful..." Qiu Lingshan could see that Wei Zhao was rather taken with the "chick" ending, and not daring to tamper with it too far, she proposed two "nicknames" she could accept.

"Oh. Then I'll call you Silly Chick." Wei Zhao did not take her answer.

"...Fine." Qiu Lingshan clenched her teeth. Silly Chick it would be — still an improvement on Brain-Dead Chick, wasn't it? The meaning was much the same, but it didn't sound half so insulting! Everything had to come one step at a time, didn't it? Rome wasn't built in a day. Qiu Lingshan told herself that, through sheer effort, she would one day work her way up to Cutie or something of the kind.

The thought gave Qiu Lingshan a sudden chill. Was she cheap or what? Already content with that? And actually hoping Wei Zhao would one day call her Cutie? If word of this ever got out, how was she ever going to face anyone?

And yet, for all that she was a little angry, there was not a shred of resentment in Qiu Lingshan's heart — not the faintest flicker of aversion.

"Silly Chick — any results on the poisoning?" Wei Zhao asked.

"Yes. The culprit has already turned himself in. According to his confession, he ordered Zhong Yongliang to carry out the poisoning in the school cafeteria — he split the poison up and put it into seven dishes, which is why only the small number of students who had eaten from all seven dishes came down with it, while the rest were perfectly fine." Qiu Lingshan gave a fairly detailed account. In principle, case details like this could not be disclosed at will; but in her heart she knew perfectly well that Wei Zhao was on very good terms with Guan Xuemin, and that Dr. Guan Pharmaceuticals had been the very party to identify this poison. So even if she withheld it from him, Wei Zhao would only learn it through other channels anyway.
