Chapter 642 — Caught in the Middle
"Mm." Tang Yun smoothed the hair back from her forehead and gave a slight nod. The scar on her head was now wholly invisible; there was not the least sign that she had ever been injured.
"Wei Zhao, I heard you broke both of Zhao Qibing's legs?" There was a violent streak in Liu Xinwen's bones, and she admired Wei Zhao enormously for breaking Zhao Qibing's legs. Back when Zhao Qibing had come to the shantytown to throw his weight around, Liu Xinwen had wanted to grab a cleaver and go settle it with her life; but violent as she was, she was no fool — she knew Zhao Qibing kept skilled bodyguards close at hand, and that going herself would have accomplished nothing.
When Tang Yun's face had been smashed and disfigured, Liu Xinwen had been furious and frightened, but Wei Zhao had broken Zhao Qibing's legs, and that grievance had been vented. Only, that night Wei Zhao had been injured, and Tang Yun and Gu Mengyao had been at each other's throats, so Liu Xinwen never got the chance to ask Wei Zhao about it.
"Broke them. And I was the one who had his tower pulled down, too." Wei Zhao spoke flatly. To his mind, such punishment was nothing at all; not having finished Zhao Qibing off was already letting him off cheap.
"My god! You're incredible! The news said it collapsed because the construction was substandard." Liu Xinwen of course knew that Qibing Tower had come down, but she had not known Wei Zhao was behind it, because the news had reported it as a self-collapse. At the time she had been baffled — even if Zhao Qibing, that developer, was utterly without conscience and built shoddy, cut-rate projects, surely he would not turn his own office building into a death trap. How brain-dead would that be? Only now did Liu Xinwen learn that the truth was otherwise. "Still, this is even better — let's see him sell a single one of his apartments now!"
Kang Xiaobo knew nothing of this and stood listening in a fog, firing off question after question. Once he had heard the whole story, he was not especially astonished; that was simply Wei Zhao's nature. It was only that this time the commotion had been a bit larger than usual.
The four of them talked as they walked toward the cafeteria, when suddenly Liu Xinwen slowed her steps and said in a low voice, "Wei Zhao, your young miss is up ahead..."
Wei Zhao had in fact already spotted Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu not far off; hearing Liu Xinwen, he merely shrugged.
"Xinwen, don't." Tang Yun tugged at the hem of Liu Xinwen's clothes, stopping her from going on. Tang Yun did not want to keep bringing up Gu Mengyao — otherwise people would think she was afraid of her.
Liu Xinwen was speaking of Gu Mengyao, while up ahead, Shen Yushu had likewise brought up Tang Yun.
"Yao Yao, my latest reconnaissance shows that Shield Bro and Tang Yun are right behind us!" Shen Yushu said to Gu Mengyao in a low voice. "Yao Yao, what countermeasures should we take?"
"What brilliant plan do you have?" Gu Mengyao asked with a frown.
"He's our errand boy. In a bit we'll call him over to eat with us and have him guard us at close quarters!" Shen Yushu said after a moment's thought.
Gu Mengyao hesitated; she neither agreed nor refused. Only after she had walked into the cafeteria did she say, "Go order the food. Order plenty."
"Oh — Yao Yao, are you going to call Shield Bro over to eat with us?" Shen Yushu asked.
"Enough nonsense. Hurry up and go!" Gu Mengyao said.
Shen Yushu went and bought a plate of every dish, and three bowls of egg-drop soup as well — exactly enough to include Wei Zhao's portion. Every student in the school knew Shen Yushu; when she went to buy food, no one jostled ahead of her, so she was back in no time and set it all on the table. Just then Wei Zhao, Tang Yun, and the others walked into the cafeteria.
"Wei Zhao!" The moment Wei Zhao came in, Gu Mengyao called out, "Come here!"
Originally Gu Mengyao had meant to have Shen Yushu call Wei Zhao over, but the instant she saw Tang Yun, she could not help recalling what she had said to her that night, and her competitive spirit flared.
Wei Zhao had not expected the young miss to call him at such a moment. He was briefly taken aback, and glanced at Tang Yun with some apology.
Tang Yun's expression was none too good either. She had not expected Gu Mengyao to summon Wei Zhao right there in school, and that condescending, overbearing tone made her uncomfortable. Even if Wei Zhao worked for you, there was no need to shout at him like that, was there?
Helpless as he felt, Wei Zhao still walked over, and Tang Yun followed behind him, nervously taking Liu Xinwen's hand. But lest Gu Mengyao notice, Tang Yun kept her head held high the whole way, refusing to show weakness.
"Sit down and eat with us!" Gu Mengyao pointed at the seat beside Shen Yushu and said to Wei Zhao.
"I..." Wei Zhao gave a bitter smile. If he sat here, what was Tang Yun supposed to do?
Tang Yun felt wronged and angry. She glared at Gu Mengyao, unable to understand why she had to be so domineering, why she had to set herself against her. It was plain that Gu Mengyao was targeting her.
"Even if Wei Zhao is your bodyguard and errand boy, it's the lunch break now — he ought to have some space of his own, shouldn't he?" Liu Xinwen was angry too. She knew Wei Zhao's identity; Tang Yun would not talk back, but Liu Xinwen had a fiery temper.
"He has to protect us while we eat!" Gu Mengyao said, word by word.
"That's right! What if someone tries to assassinate us while we're eating? What if someone poisons our food?" Shen Yushu would of course always be on Gu Mengyao's side; the moment Gu Mengyao spoke, she charged into battle.
Tang Yun and Liu Xinwen were left speechless. Eating in the school cafeteria — who would want to assassinate them? And yet, far-fetched as the reason was, it did hold up.
Tang Yun said nothing; she only bit her lip in grievance and looked at Wei Zhao.
But the more Tang Yun held her tongue, the less Wei Zhao could bear to let her go eat by herself.
Before the young miss and Tang Yun met, everything had been peaceful. Who would have guessed that once they met, the young miss would go mad and lock horns with Tang Yun?
Wei Zhao was helpless, yet there was nothing he could do. He did not know how to choose — on one side his employer, on the other his girlfriend. He truly was caught in a dilemma.
A phone rang, and Wei Zhao immediately relaxed. Just when he had not known what to say, a phone call to break the deadlock was a welcome turn. Seeing the caller ID, he smiled: he had been worrying over what excuse to use to find An Jianwen, and here An Jianwen had called him first.
"Hello?" Wei Zhao answered tentatively. An Jianwen had clearly been angry when he left yesterday, so Wei Zhao did not know what attitude he would take now.
