Chapter 609 — I Don't Know Him: If He Hadn't Been Studying Dog Shit, He Wouldn't Have Brought In This Sheepdog — Could the Pills Have Been Eaten by a Dog?

The Blossom Guardian

So it is said: when enemies meet, their eyes burn red with hatred. Kang Zhaoming saw Wei Zhao and wished he could hack him into ten thousand pieces! Especially since this fellow — who knew what relation he bore to Guan Xuemin — hung about Guan Xuemin and Lai Changyi all day long. What business was it of his?

"Heh heh, I just came to have a look around. What brings you here?" Wei Zhao had also caught on that Kang Zhaoming had come to cozy up to Guan Xin, though he could not quite understand why Kang Zhaoming had come chasing after Guan Xin again! Could it be that the boy had nothing better to do all day than chase women?

"Mm, I came to buy a couple of books..." Guan Xin's face flushed again. Thinking that the reason she had come to buy books was Wei Zhao himself, her heart pounded violently. She had always been a rather shy girl, and never more so than in the presence of the one she loved.

"Oh. Do you need any help?" Wei Zhao nodded, thinking nothing much of it. After all, Guan Xin was Guan Xuemin's granddaughter and worked in a hospital herself; coming to buy medical books was hardly strange.

"No need... I've already picked them out," Guan Xin said in a small voice.

Kang Zhaoming, standing off to the side, was about to explode with rage. Why did this Wei Zhao have to stick his nose into everything, everywhere? A perfectly good chance to strike up a conversation, ruined by Wei Zhao. Was this brat born to wreck things? He had wrecked his grandfather's birthday banquet, wrecked the Kang family's plans at the auction, and now he was even wrecking his attempts to pick up a girl!

Kang Zhaoming could bear it no longer. Pointing at Wei Zhao, he said to Guan Xin, "This thing is no good man. Don't you stay with him — keep your distance! He's a great swindler who deceives the world and steals a name. Our Kang family's signature product was counterfeited by his family. Ours is Kang's Divine Doctor Golden Wound Medicine, and he comes out with Doctor Guan Trauma Medicine. We put out a deluxe edition, and he puts out a deluxe edition too. It's outright plagiarism and imitation. A shameless wretch like this — you must never go near him! He copies everything our family does. We're called Kang the Divine Doctor, and he comes up with Doctor Guan. He's nothing but a king of knockoffs!"

Kang Zhaoming poured out in one breath all the resentment he had long pent up inside. But when he had finished, he saw Guan Xin staring coldly at him, and it sent a chill through him. What kind of look was that?

"Huh?" Kang Zhaoming suddenly saw the light. Wasn't Guan Xin's grandfather Doctor Guan? He had actually called Doctor Guan a knockoff? Wasn't that insulting her grandfather? No wonder Guan Xin was angry!

Kang Zhaoming was filled with regret. That wretched mouth of his, with no gate to hold it shut — even if that was what he thought in his heart, he could not say it aloud! Wasn't this just making Guan Xin hate him? In his panic, he could only explain incoherently: "No... no... I didn't mean that Doctor Guan is no good. I meant Doctor Guan Pharmaceuticals is no good, that it's a knockoff..."

Guan Xin was still glaring coldly at Kang Zhaoming, her eyes full of fury.

Kang Zhaoming was alarmed. What he had just said was hardly appropriate either! Doctor Guan Pharmaceuticals — wasn't that Guan Xuemin's company? The way he had put it, he would have done better not to explain at all; the more he explained, the blacker he painted it!

"No! That's not it! I don't mean Doctor Guan Pharmaceuticals is no good either. I mean Doctor Guan has been hoodwinked by that Lai Changyi and this brat! Made to do things that deceive the world and steal a name!" Kang Zhaoming explained incoherently. "I meant no insult!"

"How do you know Doctor Guan is my grandfather?" Guan Xin glared at Kang Zhaoming. She had not said a single word about her own identity before this — how did Kang Zhaoming know?

"I... uh... I guessed it..." Kang Zhaoming broke out in a sweat. Right — he had come to stage a chance encounter; he was supposed to not know Guan Xin at all. How had he let that slip?

"You knew all along, didn't you? You approached me on purpose? What do you want?" Guan Xin instinctively took two steps back, watching Kang Zhaoming warily.

"Uh... a misunderstanding, it's really a misunderstanding!" Kang Zhaoming was frantic. His performance today had truly been below par — one could almost call it a total collapse of form! He was supposed to be an expert at wooing women; how had he made such an elementary mistake?

Wei Zhao! It had to be Wei Zhao! Only after he laid eyes on this brat had he begun to blunder again and again. It had not been like this before. He felt that when he had first met Guan Xin, he had been full of grace, eloquent and learned, and that Guan Xin's ignoring him had been mere shyness. At the very least, she had not been as furious as she was now!

How could he know that at first Guan Xin had simply taken him for a passerby, a face in the crowd, and had not given him a thought? Since he was just a passerby, there was no need for Guan Xin to be angry with him. But now he was insulting her grandfather, and insulting her grandfather's and Wei Zhao's company — how could she not be angry?

And yet Guan Xin was not a woman of fiery temper. Though angry, she only glared at Kang Zhaoming and did not erupt.

"Guan Xin, the truth is I do know you. I have admired you for a long time, and so in your presence I lose my head a little and say things that make no sense. I beg your pardon!" Kang Zhaoming was, after all, a seasoned hand in matters of the heart; once he had steadied himself, a few sentences shifted all the blame away from himself.

In this way it became entirely a matter of Guan Xin being so beautiful that she had addled Kang Zhaoming's wits and made him babble. Had she been a more vain sort of girl, she would probably have been delighted and would not have held his earlier mistakes against him.

But Guan Xin's eyes held only Wei Zhao; there was no place in them for Kang Zhaoming. So his words only made her more annoyed. She frowned, almost imperceptibly, and, not wishing to look at Kang Zhaoming any longer, lowered her head.

Seeing that Guan Xin did not answer him but instead lowered her head, Kang Zhaoming assumed it was because his words had made her shy. Girls who had never had a boyfriend were always shy, so Kang Zhaoming concluded that Guan Xin was the same.

Besides, he had already administered enough of a strong dose today; if he said more, Kang Zhaoming feared Guan Xin might not be able to take it all at once. So he had no choice but to say, "Guan Xin, I have a bit of business today — a friend is expecting me. I'll be going now! I was a little out of sorts today. There was a reason for it, but it was still improper of me. Another day I will certainly call on you to apologize!"

Kang Zhaoming thought himself terribly clever: he had not only apologized but also retreated in order to advance, securing an excuse for their next meeting! That way, Kang Zhaoming could go to the hospital to see Guan Xin with perfect justification.

Guan Xin gave no response at all, did not even glance at Kang Zhaoming. Only after he had gone did she say to Wei Zhao, a little embarrassed, "I don't know him..."
