Chapter 476 — Auction Matters
Wei Zhao took the brochure from Fatty Lai's hands and began flipping through it casually.
"An auction?" Wei Zhao glanced at it and saw that this was a brochure introducing an auction, and the venue was Yanjing City.
"That's right!" Fatty Lai nodded. "But this auction is no ordinary auction! It's a grand, top-tier auction that every great family attends — held once a year!"
"Oh?" Wei Zhao was slightly taken aback. He hadn't realized this auction carried such influence — and the fact that Fatty Lai could get his hands on its brochure clearly meant he had no small amount of pull.
"Mr. Lai is right. I know of this auction; they send me an invitation every year, though I've never once attended." Here Guan Xuemin smiled a little wryly.
Given Guan Xuemin's present standing, he was exactly the sort the great families courted. A miracle doctor was worth far more than a business partner — what use was money once your life was gone?
So to show how much they valued Guan Xuemin, every family sent him an invitation each year — and more than one, at that. But Guan Xuemin had always been an incorruptible man who would not accept exorbitant consultation fees, so naturally he had never bothered attending any auction.
"This time, Professor Guan, you simply must go!" Fatty Lai said with a laugh. "Had I known you had so many invitations here, and could bring guests along, I wouldn't have gone to such trouble to get my hands on one!"
"Heh..." Wei Zhao smiled. So Fatty Lai had gotten hold of an invitation to show off, only to discover that Guan Xuemin had several — which killed his appetite for showing off on the spot.
"At this auction, everything on the block is some rare treasure of the world, and only the great families' wealth is deep enough to bid these things down!" Fatty Lai said. "Of course, besides the old established families, some rising enterprises get invited too — those people have plenty of potential."
"You mean we should put the Longevity Detox Pill up for auction there?" Wei Zhao had more or less grasped Fatty Lai's intent.
"Exactly. Everyone who attends this auction is a rich man. As long as they're willing to chase after it, our company's product won't be able to stay on the shelves!" Fatty Lai said.
"Fine, you decide." Wei Zhao nodded. Since he had already put Fatty Lai in charge, if he said it would work, then it would work.
"Working under the boss is just the best." Hearing that Wei Zhao would not interfere in the slightest, Fatty Lai was so delighted he nearly burst into tears again, and only just managed to hold it in at the last moment. "Boss, I've booked three tickets for tonight. We'll head to the airport shortly and fly to Yanjing."
"So soon?" Wei Zhao was a little surprised. "The brochure says the auction doesn't start until three days from now, doesn't it?"
"That's the date of the auction itself. If we were only going to buy, there'd be no problem — a day or two late would be fine," Fatty Lai said. "But we're going to sell at the auction too, so we have to set out early. Items have to be submitted for review in advance."
"I see." Wei Zhao nodded and left everything to Fatty Lai's arrangements.
Wei Zhao sent a message each to Gu Pengzhan and the young miss, saying he had business to attend to and would be away for a few days. Gu Pengzhan naturally said nothing, but Gu Mengyao replied in a cool, offhand tone: "Mind your place. Don't go fooling around with women."
"Heh..." Wei Zhao shook his head at Gu Mengyao's text, then called Tang Yun. Unfortunately, Tang Yun's phone was still switched off.
Wei Zhao could only send Tang Yun a text, explaining that there was nothing between him and Feng Xiaoxiao, and that he was rushing to Yanjing City for an auction and would bring her back a gift.
Meanwhile, at Divine Doctor Kang's home.
Divine Doctor Kang had naturally received an invitation to the auction as well. Though the Kang family could not even be counted among the lowest-ranking great families now, among enterprises it was a leader, so the auction of course had a place for the Kang family.
Besides, every year the Kang family had to put up a few things for auction.
"Why has this year's auction been moved up?" Divine Doctor Kang studied the invitation in his hand, puzzled.
"Indeed, Father. It's always been in August every year. Who knows what madness has gotten into the Yu family this year..." Kang Guifeng nodded, equally baffled.
"Quiet!" Divine Doctor Kang glared at Kang Guifeng. "Is the Yu family's business yours to gossip about as you please?"
"It's not as if there's an outsider here..." Kang Guifeng knew he had misspoken, but still offered a word in his own defense.
"No outsider? If there were an outsider, it would be a disaster! You'd be plunging our Kang family into utter ruin!" Divine Doctor Kang gave a cold snort. "Such things — don't even think about them from now on. We are at the crucial stage of the Kang family's advancement to great-family status; do not stir up trouble! Right now it's only the two of us, but once you get used to saying it, what if you let it slip outside one day? Wouldn't that ruin everything?"
"Yes, Father! I was wrong!" Kang Guifeng apologized hurriedly.
"Whatever the reason the Yu family moved this auction up, our Kang family will still attend!" Divine Doctor Kang snorted. "This time I'll go to Yanjing with you and Zhaolong as well. First we'll go to the Xiao family to propose marriage, then we'll attend the auction!"
"Yes, Father!" Kang Guifeng nodded. "For this year's auction items, shall we prepare them to the same standard as previous years?"
"Yes, but prepare one extra portion to give the Xiao family as betrothal gifts!" Divine Doctor Kang said. "Get it ready as soon as possible — we set out today or tomorrow!"
"Don't worry, Father!" Kang Guifeng answered with a nod.
Divine Doctor Kang was fairly at ease about Kang Guifeng; this eldest son was far more reliable than the younger one. He hoped this trip to Yanjing would not only win the Xiao family's support, but also rake in a fortune at the auction!
Every year the Kang family prepared several portions of a specially made wound medicine for the auction. It was sought after by all the great families and often fetched astronomical prices — one of the Kang family's annual sources of income.
But the so-called specially made wound medicine was in fact just ordinary wound medicine that had not been diluted, at most using older, more potent medicinal ingredients for certain components.
That naturally set it apart from the wound medicine sold on the market, and such a fine thing was bound to be chased after by the rich. Divine Doctor Kang had, on the strength of it, raised his own reputation considerably.
