Chapter 447 — Rolling In
Yang Huaijun wasted no words either, but went straight to the point: "Grandpa Guan, the main reason I brought Xiao Song along this time is that I'd like to make use of your connections to ask around about a few things."
"Xiao Yang, no need for formalities—just say what you need." Guan Xuemin knew that Yang Huaijun must have something important if he had come looking for him, so he waved a hand and asked directly: "Next time Xiao Song has business here, he can just come over himself."
"Thank you, Professor Guan," Qiu Lingshan said hurriedly.
"It's like this, Grandpa Guan. Recently there's been an organ-trafficking ring operating brazenly—they snatch beggars, vagrants, even the disabled right off the streets and cut out their kidneys or their corneas. They've reached the point of utter lawlessness!" Yang Huaijun said. "So I'd like to ask you to help me find out where the major hospitals are sourcing the organs and corneas used in transplants, in the hope that we can find some leads."
"That's easy enough, but all I can do is ask around. For operations already performed, even if the organs came from illegal sources, there's no way I can demand that they be cut back out," Guan Xuemin said.
"Naturally. That would be too inhumane. But the parties involved in the illegal trade still have to be punished," Yang Huaijun said. "I'll have to trouble Grandpa Guan with this."
"I'll give Xiao Xiang a call. He's a shareholder in several hospitals and better informed than I am," Guan Xuemin said with a nod.
The Xiao Xiang Guan Xuemin spoke of was his youngest son, Guan Xiaoxiang, who was also Guan Xin's father. He held shares in a number of hospitals and, together with Guan Xin's mother, owned a private hospital in Songjiang City. He could well be called one of the province's notable figures in medical circles.
"Heh, with Uncle Xiang and Aunt Lan helping, we ought to be able to dig up some information," Yang Huaijun said with a nod. The Aunt Lan he referred to was Guan Xiaoxiang's wife and Guan Xin's mother.
Yang Huaijun had brought Qiu Lingshan here chiefly to ask Guan Xuemin for help. Now that the matter had been stated and Guan Xuemin had readily agreed, there was no need to linger. Besides, Guan Xuemin clearly had other business with Wei Zhao, so Yang Huaijun rose to take his leave: "Grandpa Guan, we'll be off then. Things are busy at the bureau; I'll come see you another day."
"Go and see to your work. Come for a meal another day," Guan Xuemin said with a nod.
"Wait!" Wei Zhao called Yang Huaijun back. "I've already prepared the medicine for your second course of treatment, but I didn't bring it with me today. Tomorrow—come to my school to pick it up?"
"Fine. But I've been seconded to a neighboring city recently to help investigate a major case, so I may be very busy. If I don't have the time, I'll send Xiao Song," Yang Huaijun said with a nod. "I won't say any more thanks. It's all in what goes unsaid."
"Go be busy, then. Don't work yourself to death," Wei Zhao said with a shrug. "Back before I treated you, I never saw you this busy."
"Heh heh, a man does as much as his abilities allow. Aren't I more or less recovered now?" Yang Huaijun said, a little sheepishly. "Besides, aren't I also creating opportunities for you and Xiao Song?"
"Huh?!" Wei Zhao's eyes went wide, and Qiu Lingshan's eyes went wide too.
Wei Zhao was somewhat speechless—why did Yang Huaijun always want to match him up with Qiu Lingshan? And what astonished Qiu Lingshan was how Brother Yang could turn so utterly unserious in front of Wei Zhao.
Hmph, he must have been led astray by this brat. He certainly must have! When the day came that he turned things around, he would make Wei Zhao pay! But for now it seemed he could not turn anything around just yet—he would have to keep working at it.
After seeing Yang Huaijun and Qiu Lingshan off, Wei Zhao returned to Guan Xuemin's study. Guan Xuemin was on the phone; he had just hung up when Wei Zhao came in. "I called President Lai. He'll be over shortly."
"President Lai? Fatty Lai, you mean?" Wei Zhao was taken aback for a moment before it registered.
"Heh, that's the one." Naturally it would not do for Guan Xuemin to call Lai Changyi "Fatty Lai."
They had scarcely exchanged a few words when voices came from outside the study, and right after that a ball-like person came rolling into the room. Fatty Lai had been here before, so Mama Liu knew him; the moment he arrived, he was let straight in.
But Fatty Lai had heard from Guan Xuemin that Wei Zhao was here too, so he had gotten a little anxious. He wanted so badly to see Wei Zhao—they had not met since they parted at the birthday banquet—and in his excitement he tripped at the study doorway and rolled straight into the room.
Wei Zhao was startled by Fatty Lai. "What kind of martial art is that? Even if you wanted to get in faster, there was no need to come in like that."
"Heh heh... a slip, a slip. I tripped and it turned out like this..." Fatty Lai said, a little embarrassed. "Divine Physician Lin, I've finally seen you. I've missed you so much! Wuwu, I thought you had abandoned me and I would never see you again! You have no idea how excited I was when Professor Guan called me just now. I wasn't even this excited on the day I married my wife!"
"All right... just keep your distance from me. I'm a little scared. I don't doubt your orientation, but I'm still on my guard against you," Wei Zhao said, once he was a meter away from Fatty Lai.
"It's fine. Just seeing Divine Physician Lin is enough for me." Fatty Lai did not mind in the least being disliked by Wei Zhao. He pulled a document from his backpack. "Divine Physician Lin, please have a look. The ownership of the building has been fully transferred to Miss Guan Xin's name. As soon as Miss Guan Xin signs, the contract takes effect."
"Oh? Isn't your new company in that building too? If you transfer everything, what will you do?" Wei Zhao asked, puzzled.
"I've become a tenant. From now on I'll pay my rent on time every month!" Fatty Lai said. "Divine Physician Lin, you're not going to kick me out, are you..."
Wei Zhao found Fatty Lai a bit of a nuisance, but he had no reason to drive him out. The man had given him his own building—driving him out after that would be too dishonorable.
"No, I won't. Stay as long as you like. As for rent, forget it," Wei Zhao said with a wave of his hand.
"Heh heh, then I'll keep staying!" Fatty Lai had already made up his mind to latch onto Wei Zhao. He had also figured out that as long as he stayed close to Wei Zhao, benefits would surely abound in the future.
Wei Zhao had not been close to him before and had not much cared for him, but that was all right—with time they would naturally grow close. Weren't things already quite good now? At least Wei Zhao was willing to see him, and that was a fine beginning.
"How is your father doing?" Wei Zhao felt a little uneasy about having simply taken a whole building from the man. He was not the sort who liked to reap without sowing; though his fees were high and his commissions cutthroat, he had still put in the work.
